KEYNOTE: How to Reduce Gender Bias in the Workplace

EMOTIONAL INEQUALITY

What would happen if your colleagues discriminated against youjustfor speaking assertively? Unfortunately, gender bias is a reality in today's workplace. Extensive research from our partner VitalSmarts has shown that women's perceived competence is reduced by 35 percent and their perceived value by $15,088 when they are as assertive or dominant as their male counterparts. Men who are assertive are also penalized, but to a much lesser extent.

Emotional inequality is real and it is also unfair. It is unacceptable and needs to be addressed at cultural, legal, institutional and social levels. On the other hand, women who experience it can take control. Research shows that those who use a short pre-statement of caution and common sense can reduce the impact of social backlash and emotional inequality by 27%.

Skills to reduce social backlash:

Use a pre-statement sentence: Before confronting, show that you are in control of your emotions and committed to a shared value.

Share your goodwill: Quickly and clearly explain your positive intentions before sharing your strong opinion.

Learn skills to make the environment safe: High stakes and emotional disagreements require a specific but learnable set of skills.

Open up for discussion: Shine a light on gender bias.
