KEYNOTE: Critical Conversations for Diversity in the Workplace

The ability to thrive in adiverseworld is becoming increasingly important. Today's workforce, suppliers and customers are already incredibly diverse in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, language, education, economic class, etc. This diversity is the guarantor of company growth as business becomes global and interconnected. Organizations need to turn this diversity into a competitive advantage, otherwise it becomes a significant barrier.

VitalSmarts' research shows that the way in which the taboo "non-negotiables" of diversity are handled - whether or not an organization, work team or individual is biased - can result in disproportionately different outcomes when compared in terms of impact.

We found that

  • 62 percent of minorities and 53 percent of women face diversity issues on a monthly basis.
  • 53 percent say no one confronts or discusses these issues when they arise.

But there is hope. Companies, managers and employees who can successfully address the non-negotiables are better equipped to solve them. Critical conversation skills reduce the impact of workplace bias by 47 percent, which improves both relationships and organizational outcomes.

How to turn bias into inspiring results:

  • Silence is not golden; it's collusion. If you witness diversity bias, speak up candidly and respectfully.
  • Do not assume ulterior motives. If possible, approach the problem as a coachable moment.
  • Focus on the model, not the singular event. Don't overreact to the incident when the model is your main concern
  • Start with facts, not conclusions. Stick to specific observations and encourage the other person to share with you what they perceive.
  • Dialog, not monologue. If you are open to hearing the other person's point of view, they will be more open to hearing yours.
