Do you knock on your manager's door and complain that you don't feel engaged enough at work and demand that he or she do something about it? Of course not, because this is primarily about you, not your employer.
The company may offer you perks like break rooms with pool tables or Free Friday, but even the most wonderful of these things won't make unhappy employees happy all at once. It is up to you whether you are engaged in your work or not.
Regardless of your position or your company's emphasis on "Employee Engagement", it is primarily your responsibility to be engaged. In fact, some employees find a way to be engaged in any situation. Interestingly, often engagement at work is reflected in engagement at home or in life.
Although we may see our work and personal lives as separate, they are part of an inseparable whole; family life, social life, work life, etc. are all intertwined. If you are not committed to your work, you probably are in other areas of your life.
If you are saying to yourself, "This is not a job to be engaged in," then please take a look at yourself in the mirror first. Both the employee and the employer bear equal responsibility (50%-50%) for engagement. However, individuals - as well as their managers - have the will and the power to increase their own engagement. You cannot wait for your employer to come to you; if you do, it means that: (1) your employer fully understands "employee engagement", (2) recognizes that you and others are not engaged, and (3) knows the factors that will make you engaged.
Remember that Employee Engagement starts with you, not with your employer. To help you and your colleagues measure employee engagement, we have developed a free method that you can use anytime, as often as you like: ENGAGEMENT MAGICĀ® Self-Assessment. MAGIC stands for the initials of 5 key factors that must be present when creating Employee Engagement:Meaning, Autonomy, Growth, Impact and Connection.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT IS A SPECTRUM
The boundaries of employee engagement are not clear-cut. It is like a spectrum, it is not absolute. You may not always feel engaged at work or in your personal life. Can you imagine yourself in the company restroom, changing a roll of toilet paper, feeling like you are in the flow and doing something important? Of course not. This is an example of how you can't feel 100% engaged all the time. Nobody feels that way anyway. Your level of engagement depends on the following conditions:
These are all variable, so your commitment may also vary over time. This is also not very important. What matters is your long-term and average level of engagement. To clarify this, you first need to understand that engagement is 50% your responsibility and 50% your company's responsibility. It will be easier for you to see the situation and make decisions about your company and your employer, the other 50%, if you first fulfill your responsibility for your personal commitment.
